Nashville, TN, April 2023 – Well known music industry figure Mike Lawson has purchased TELEFUNKEN’S Copperhead Deluxe microphone for his Nashville Studio. An accomplished musician, songwriter, and publisher, he has an expansive career spanning over three decades.

Meet Mike Lawson at NAMM 2023 Booth #72183 MMR/SBO+

Lawson has an extensive collection of guitars, basses, and other instruments, as well as a collection of microphones. He tends to choose mics that match his voice and work well with his acoustic instruments, and recently acquired the TF39 Copperhead Deluxe large-diaphragm tube condenser mic from Telefunken, his second Telefunken microphone after having bought the TF11 in 2021. His new TF39 is an expansion of TELEFUNKEN’s “Copperhead” sound, with the addition of 3-pattern selection between Cardioid, Omnidirectional, and Figure-8. This added feature set gives the TF39 ample flexibility and options in the studio.

“The TF39 through a vintage Groove Tubes SuPre made by my late friend Aspen Pittman, and the Manley ELOP+ compressor, works particularly well in combination for vocals. I’ve been cutting all of my vocals for my new album using this combination.” He monitors his work through Focal Trio6 speakers, and the matching Sub6, an addition made in the last year.

Over the years, Lawson has collaborated with numerous artists such as Merl Saunders, Vince Welnick, Vassar Clements, Pete Sears, John McEuen, Bob Welch, Jorma Kaukonen, Phil Keaggy, Jack Casady, Michael Cleveland, and many others. Lawson is a former NARAS Trustee and has served on the TEC Foundation board for eight years.

Lawson’s impressive home studio features the Raven MTi2 touchscreen system, which streamlines his signal chain. He primary works alone, with musicians from around the globe sending in their parts. He has released four albums since 2019 and is currently working on his fifth.

As a prolific publisher, Lawson has published over 200 books and videos on audio and music production, launching the book careers of best-selling authors such as Bobby Owsinski Bill Gibson, and Mr. Bonzai. He played a crucial role in signing Ken Scott for Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust (Alfred Music) and Quincy Jones for Hal Leonard’s “Q on Producing.”

Mike is also the executive director of Technology in Music Education (TI:ME), which produces teacher training professional development sessions around the USA, including ten at the 2023 NAMM Show. He owns artistpro Publishing, which produces MMR Magazine (Musical Merchandise Review) and SBO+ Magazine, the largest publications in their field. Lawson was the editor of SBO+ for eight years before acquiring it in 2021. He enjoys supporting music educators and is the associate editor of MMR.
