The U48 is a historically accurate variant of the U47 that features Bidirectional (or Figure-8) instead of Omnidirectional as its secondary polar pattern. The Bidirectional capability can be very helpful in controlling ambient and non-direct sound when recording ensembles or in less-than-ideal recording environments. The U47 and U48 are sonically identical when using the Cardioid polar pattern.

Sonic Characteristic

The U48’s authoritative mid-range and extended low-end response make it an excellent tool for recording vocals and acoustic instruments, both near and far. Its classic mid-forward frequency response and high-fidelity sound combined with the addition of Bidirectional capability make it a top choice for most recording environments. Regardless of genre or instrument, the U48 can make a sound source sound larger than life.

Circuit Design

The U48 was released years after the U47 and while it may be lesser known, the U48 is the preferred model for many professional engineers. The two microphone’s circuits are nearly identical, apart from the polarizing network and capsule connection. The TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik recreation of the U48 is electronically true to the original circuit except for the use of the VF14K, a plug-and-play replacement for the extremely rare VF14 vacuum tube. The new production U48 also features an American-made mylar M7 capsule, an American-made BV8 output transformer, premium electrolytic and polystyrene capacitors, and precision film resistors.

The TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik U48 recreation is adorned in the classic styling of early, “long body” U48’s; with a chrome headgrille and matte nickel-plated body. All hardware and mechanical parts are machined to vintage specifications in order to be cross compatible with original examples. As with the original, the new U48 is distinguished from the U47 by its red polar pattern symbols. The classic TELEFUNKEN Diamond logo is proudly riveted to the front of every body tube.

Each U48 microphone comes complete with M940 power supply, M840 25’ dual-shielded ACX-7 tube microphone cable, M740 elastic shock mount, FC40 locking flight case and WB40 wooden microphone box.
