Few people ever think of the little known drummer that sits humbly behind his kit and keeps the timing of the band. Most people think of the frontman or lead singer first. Interestingly enough few drummers ever play for over 30+ years in the industry. Some drummers have like: Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Anton Fig of Frehley's Comet and The CBS Orchestra on The Late Show with David Letterman, Max Weinberg of the E Street Band and The Max Weinberg 7 on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the Legendary Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones.
Another name that tops that list is Velvet Revolver's Veteran Skinsmen Matt Sorum. Though Matt is still on the young side of 50, he has been pounding away on the drums for the past 35 years with a versatile career. Starting out in 1975, Matt has kept time for such awesome groups as Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses, Hawk, The Cult, Slash's Snakepit, Y Kant Tori Read (fronted by Tori Amos) and Motörhead. Playing with such an enormous sound Matt, who was born of English and Norwegian descent, could easily be called the music industry's God Of Thunder.
In 1994, Matt was one of many guest drummers on the album, "Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich". Playing with the Buddy Rich Big Band, Matt was able to display his skill and finesse as a jazz drummer. A jack of all trades, Matt has even embraced newer sides of the music industry such as instructional videos and computer software. In 1998, he released his first and only drum instructional video "Drum Licks and Tricks from the Rock n Roll Jungle" demonstrating his techniques, and has also lent his talents to Submersible Music's DrumCore software.
Though fresh off his recently 2009 tour with Motörhead, a true session man, Matt is enjoying some downtime to pursue other avenues for his career while Velvet Revolver finishes compiling material for their next album and searches for a new frontman after the departure of Scott Weiland. Whether it is playing thunderously behind the drums, laying down tracks and licks for drum software or introducing a new piece of his clothing line SorumNoce to the world, Matt brings a style and experience to the table like no other veteran in his class.
Matt recently attended the 127th NAMM show and took time to drop by the TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik booth. Impressed with the performance of Telefunken mics he tried out, Matt had to get a few for his collection. We are honored that Matt has chosen to use some Telefunken microphones in his collection. And we are so looking forward to hearing how it's helped him produce his "God Of Thunder" sound in the studio and live on tour. We here at TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik welcome him to the family.
