"If Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Madonna ever had a crazy one night stand, the lovechild of that musical affair could only be described as ... Mina Koo," says Matthew K. Brown in the bio he wrote for her website, www.minaminakoo.com. Indeed, Mina, who burst on the California scene from Seoul, South Korea a few years ago, is a dynamic and versatile performer, a musician, dancer, and singer-songwriter with a pop flair and dynamic choreography. She has headlined famous LA venues such as The Mint, House of Blues, and Whisky a Go-Go, and her first CD, Mina, brings heat to the dance floor.
In an interview for MTM (Middle Tennessee Music), Mina sums herself up this way: "I'm called Mina (Mina Koo), a singer-songwriter, an international pop artist, a performer." She continues, "It feels to me that, it's not that "I" do music, but that music is holding me tight and driving me keep doing it!"
She was raised by her "auntie" who, as a musician herself, encouraged young Mina and had her sing to her aunt's piano accompaniment. Mina calls this "my best 'play' time as a kid." She then went on to win prizes in children's singing contests and was broadcast on KBS, the major national TV station in South Korea. From this "early achievement mark as a little singer-songwriter in [her] childhood," Mina eventually got into commercial music after she came to Hollywood four years ago.
Mina's major inspirations include Michael Jackson, Shakira, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna, among others. "Today," she says, "everyone and everything I encounter is an inspiration to me." (Read more at www.midtnmusic.com/an-interview-with-mina-koo-korea-to-la-with-aitp/.)
Following the release of Mina, her song "More Than a Crush" appeared in the indie film "Lady Beard," as well as on the MTV reality show Challenge: Battle of the Exes. Another track, "Jini" (based on the tumultuous life of Hwang Jini, who lived in 16th-century Joseon, Korea, and became the most famous gisaeng or female performer in Korean history), was featured in the popular E! network's TV Show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Most recently, and demonstarting her songwriting bonafides, Mina's club anthem "Troubadours (Dance Floors)" was selected as a Finalist in the 2012 John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
