In 1994 a Southern rock jam band formed as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody called Gov't Mule (pronounced Government Mule). Just like the same way that The Grateful Dead were often referred to as "The Dead", Gov't Mule receives the same affection and is often referred to as "The Mule".

Since their debut album in 1995, The Mule has released numerous albums, EP's and live albums, and become a staple act at music festivals around North America. Ever expanding with both its members and frequent guests boasting members from other notable bands, The Mule has added various funk and blues rock elements to the band's sound over the years.

Though The Mule tends to record, release and tour whenever The Allman Brothers Band is off the record, release, tour merry-go-round. The Mule has put out and supported an impressive 16 albums worth of material even with guitarist Warren Haynes splitting his time between The Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends and other re-formed Grateful Dead bands.

Though there have been member changes throughout the years, including one founding member whom passed away in 2000, the core of guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts has stayed the same. Warren Haynes and original bassist Allen Woody shared a love for 1960s power trios which include Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the James Gang and Mountain. With Matt Abts on drums, the core power trio sound of Gov't Mule was born.

Gov't Mule is listed as a Southern Rock, Jam Band type of group, but over the years they have played a lot of cover songs of groups they draw influence from. Groups such as: Neil Young, Free, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, Little Feat, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin to name a few. The Mule has achieved a great amount of respect from their peers such as The Black Crowes, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Grace Potter and Steve Winwood, and the list goes on.
