AIR Studios is one of London's premiere recording studios. Air Studios began its long and prestigious history in 1969 when Beatles producer George Martin left EMI and with his partner John Burgess opened AIR Studios. AIR Studios has expanded itself from being a simple music recording studio to being established independent recording complex in the heart of central London. It became one of the most successful studio operations in the world.
AIR Studios had opened a sister studio, on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, which began in the mid 1970's attracting major artists from around the globe. Sadly, Hurricane Hugo devastated the island in 1989, and the studio was forced to close. However, 1991 heralded the beginning of a new AIR Studios located in the beautiful Lyndhurst Hall in London. A site of significant architectural and historical interest, Lyndhurst Hall occupies a prominent corner position in the quiet suburb of Hampstead and is classified as a Grade II* listed building.
Originally a church and missionary school Lyndhurst Hall was designed in 1880 by the great Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse (designer of the Natural History Museum). The space was revamped as a recording facility and opened for business in December 1992. AIR Lyndhurst is now a key London facility for classical and popular recordings, as well as film scores, television post-production, and dialogue, sound effects and music for video games.
Artists that have recorded at the Lyndhurst studio over the years are: Mumford & Sons, Muse, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel, The Black Eyed Paeas, Amore, Joni Mitchell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, George Michael and many more. Artists that recorded at the Montserrat studio before it's closing were: Jimmy Buffett, Elton John, Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Paul McCartney, Rush, The Police, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Midge Ure, Little River Band, Sheena Easton, Luther Vandross, and Supertramp.
Alongside its superb studios in Hampstead and Shoreditch, AIR Entertainment Group provides a range of other services for the music, media, film and TV industries: Recording & Mixing, Mastering, an Engineering Roster, Post Production and much more. Recently AIR Studios had the opportunity to add some Telefunken ELA M 251 E microphones to go along with their Telefunken U47 microphones already in their arsenal of equipment.
