AFI hails from Ukiah, California. Formed in 1991, AFI is an American alternative rock band consisting of the same lineup since 1998 with lead vocalist Davey Havok, drummer and backup vocalist Adam Carson, bassist Hunter Burgan, and guitarist Jade Puget. Hunter and Jade both play keyboards and contribute backup vocals. Beginning with 1995's Answer That and Stay Fashionable, they have released eight studio albums in their 18 years as a band.
In their early days, AFI's style was hardcore punk, but over time their sound has grown, their goth and horror punk stylings emerging on 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset and 2000's The Art of Drowning. Major success eluded them, however, until 2003, when Sing the Sorrow rose to #5 on the Billboard 200, carried in part by the strength of the singles "Girl's Not Grey" and "The Leaving Song, Pt. II." They followed this success in 2006 with Decemberunderground and the hit single "Miss Murder." Another strong song on this album was "Love Like Winter" which reached #4 on the Modern Rock charts. In 2009 they released their latest album, Crash Love.
Davey Havok, along with Mark Stopholese (guitar) and Vic Chalker (bass) formed AFI while still in high school in Ukiah, CA, in 1991. AFI is an abbreviation of A Fire Inside, the title of their 1998 EP and their official website afireinside.net, but band members have also stated that the name comes from the titles Asking For It and Anthems For Insubordinates; other references include Americans For Incest, A Few Idiots, A'buncha F*ckin' Idiots, and Ah F*ck It.
Espousing a dynamic paradigm that anything goes except substance abuse AFI band members Adam Carson, Davey Havok, Hunter, and Jade Puget subscribed to the straight-edge ethic of living free from tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; they further refused to assign genre labels to their music. Stalwart AFI fans, calling themselves Despair Faction, have found AFI's unpredictable variety of styles invigorating, and have joined forces at concerts to form a crew of diehard devotees. Named by Revolver as one of the ten best live bands ever, they have toured extensively over the years.
The AFI public image depends heavily on a display of black garb, enhanced by make-up and tattoos. Because of this ominous appearance, some observers persist in linking AFI with the gothic vein of punk music. But Havok and his mates have maintained their individuality and refuse to acknowledge their affiliation with one specific movement of punk rock.

AFI has fallen in love with the Telefunken M80. Not just because of its performance, but also its durability. "The lead vocal mic hits the stage about 5 times per show, and not only did the M80 not break, but the one that hit the stage every night sounded exactly the same as the other 3 we used at the end of the tour!! Amazing!!! And the gain before feedback is the best I have ever experienced. I will never use another mic on stage for vocals!!!" exclaims Jamie Rephann, FOH for AFI. After just one tour, they were convinced, so much so that they have ordered two Special Limited Edition Gold M80s to match not just their set, but their vibe.
The M80 gives a superior alternative to the midrange-laden character of the "industry standard microphone"...
