Classic ribbon microphones are known for their characteristic sound, notably different than condenser or dynamic microphones. A typical ribbon microphone offers a "softer" response, which lends itself especially well to brass; but is also applicable to vocals, guitars, drum overheads, and signal sources that sometimes seem strident through more commonly used transducers. The TELEFUNKEN RM-5C is a revolutionary departure from older ribbon microphone designs.
Designed by renowned ribbon microphone specialist Jerry Silvia, the RM-5C represents a technical breakthrough in ribbon microphone construction. The highly directional cardioid pattern, improved output level, and wide frequency response are achieved through optimal acoustic design and the use of cutting edge magnetic materials. The result of intense research and development, the RM-5C offers frequency response from 30 -18,000 Hz, and output impedance that matches perfectly with any high quality microphone preamplifier.
Sonically, the RM-5C is more aggressive than previously designed ribbon microphones, with an extended, but never harsh, top end and a focused, robust low end. The RM-5C is physically inspired by the classic RCA BK-5, but is not a copy of that legendary microphone. The innovative designers at Silvia Classics have updated the original design both esthetically and technically, with exceptional success.
