On Friday, November 5th, 2010 TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik hosted an interactive in-studio workshop featuring the entire TELEFUNKEN microphone product line with performing artist Jackie Greene (www.jackiegreene.com). This event took place at Studio Paradiso in San Francisco, and was open to the recording public and AES attendees. It gave guests a chance to be hands-on in both the control room and the recording studio spaces, offering suggestions and asking questions about the microphones in use.
This recording session is now available as multi-track audio files for download, allowing you the chance to audition and hear these microphones for yourself in the comfort of your own studio or listening environment.
The song is titled "Rise Up Singing" and was written by Jackie Greene. The vibe is pure Americana, and features Jackie on all of the instruments including acoustic, electric and bass guitar, drum set, and vocals. Each instrument was recorded using a variety of TELEFUNKEN microphones, through some of the best preamplifiers in the industry.
These files are an excellent reference source for hearing the difference between the classic models like the U47, C12, and ELA M 251 versus some of the newest TELEFUNKEN microphone designs like the AR-51, AK-47 MkII, and the new fixed cardioid CU-29 "Copperhead." This session also includes a rare glimpse of the exotic ELA M 270 Stereo tube microphone, as well as the ELA M 260 small diaphragm tube condenser.
Photos of the instruments and their microphone placements have been included for your reference. The session was engineered by David Simon Baker (www.illreverend.com) and Alan Veniscofsky (TELEFUNKEN Director of Operations), and assisted by house engineer Sean Biggs (www.studioparadiso.net).
All audio files are presented in .WAV format and were recorded at 24bit / 44.1KHz sample rate. They are clearly labeled in the same format with the source listed first (LEAD VOX, ACOUSTIC, PIANO). Then the microphone used (C12, AR-51, etc), followed by the make and model of pre amplifier (BAE 1073, MANLEY, etc.).
A rough mix track has been provided along with the files for your reference, but we really suggest you mix the track yourself in order to get the full effect of how the character of each microphone setup will sit in a mix.
Download the zips below, which are grouped by type for quicker download (total filesize of all WAV files: 1.52 GB). The first zip includes original session photos, PDF article, and the Input List in an Excel spreadsheet.
